What is a Gift With Purchase (GWP) promotion?

What a Gift With Purchase (GWP) promotion is

A Gift With Purchase (GWP) promotion automatically adds a free item to a customer’s cart when they meet the rules you set (for example: spending at least a certain amount, or adding specific products).

In Roadmap, a Gift With Purchase discount adds the free gift to the cart automatically once the discount conditions are met.

Where you manage GWPs in Roadmap

You create and manage GWPs in Discounts / Gift with Purchase. This dashboard lists your offers and helps you see what’s currently running.

  • Filters: Use the tabs All, Active, Scheduled, Expired, and Draft to quickly find the promotion you need.
  • At-a-glance details: Offers are shown with details like Type, Schedule, and Status.

How a GWP promotion works (in plain terms)

Every Gift With Purchase has three parts:

  1. Conditions: What a shopper must do to qualify.

  2. Customer Eligibility: Who is allowed to qualify.

  3. Free Gifts: What gets added to the cart (and any limits on how often it can be added).

If you’re running multiple offers, keep each one “clean” by separating them with Customer Eligibility (for example, tags or logged-in customers) and/or different Conditions.

Common GWP conditions you can use

On the New Gift with Purchase screen, the Conditions section includes these condition types:

  • Minimum Spend: The shopper must spend at least the amount you enter under If the customer spends at least…

  • Buy X Get Y: The shopper must buy a specific product/variant (or from a selected list) and meet the quantity you set.

  • Buy A+B+C Get Y: The shopper must add a combination of required products before the gift is added.

These condition types are selected in the Conditions area of New Gift with Purchase.

Who can qualify (Customer Eligibility)

Customer Eligibility controls which shoppers can receive the gift. Options shown in the app include:

  • All customers
  • Logged in only customers
  • Customers tagged with
  • Customers NOT tagged with
  • Customers in specific countries
  • Customers NOT in specific countries
  • Customers with order history
  • Members / Non-members

What gets added (Free Gifts)

In Free Gifts, you choose the free item and control how it shows up in the cart:

  • Search variants or select Browse to pick the gift item.

  • Maximum number of uses per order controls how many times the gift can be added on a single order.

  • Note is shown to customers on the cart page.

If Maximum number of uses per order is left as No limit, a shopper who qualifies multiple times may receive more than one gift in the same checkout.

Status and scheduling (Active Dates)

GWPs can be turned on/off and scheduled:

  • Status: Set whether the promotion is Active (or keep it inactive while you finish setup).

  • Active Dates: Set a Start date and Start time, and optionally enable Set end date to automatically stop the promotion.

Creating a GWP (quick UI map)

Go to Discounts / Gift with Purchase.

Select Create a new discount.

In Select discount method, choose Gift with Purchase.

On New Gift with Purchase, fill in Name, Status, Conditions, Customer Eligibility, and Free Gifts.

Set Active Dates, then select Save.

A GWP focuses on adding a free item when rules are met. In the Select discount method modal, Roadmap also offers Product Discount, Order Discount, Shipping Discount, and a Discount Code Generator—those change prices or shipping, rather than adding a free gift.

The gift appears as a cart item when the rules are met. The text you enter in Free Gifts → Note is shown to customers on the cart page.
