# Handling custom payment terms like "20th of the month following"

Use Roadmap's company metafield to automate monthly invoice due dates like 20th of the month following.

Last verified against Shopify: April 28, 2026

This article explains how to handle B2B payment terms that do not fit Shopify's native `Net` options.

Roadmap now ships a company metafield for this workflow.

Use it to set a fixed invoice day, such as the `20th of the month following`.

### Why Shopify's native terms do not cover every arrangement

At the company location level, Shopify supports `Due on fulfillment` and the standard US `Net` terms.

That covers many wholesale relationships, but not every finance agreement.

Common exceptions include terms such as `20th of the month following`.

That kind of rule depends on the calendar, not a flat number of days from checkout.

If you still need the standard company location setup first, use [Setting up payment terms for your B2B retailers](/trade-and-b2b/checkout-and-payment/setting-up-payment-terms-for-your-b2b-retailers.md).

### What the Roadmap metafield does

When **Roadmap: Net Monthly Invoice Date** is filled in on the company, Roadmap overrides the order's default due date after fulfillment.

The value is a day number from `1` to `31`.

Example:

* `20` means the invoice is due on the 20th of the month after fulfillment
* leave it blank to keep Shopify's default payment terms

{% hint style="info" %}
This override only runs when the metafield has a value.

If the field is blank, Shopify stays in control.
{% endhint %}

### How the due date is calculated

Roadmap calculates the date from the fulfillment date, not the order submission date.

That means the due month starts when the order is fulfilled.

For example:

* order placed on `29 April`
* order fulfilled on `2 May`
* metafield value is `20`
* final due date becomes `20 June`

If the same order is fulfilled on `29 April`, the due date becomes `20 May`.

### Recommended setup

Use this setup for retailers who should pay on a fixed monthly cycle after goods ship.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Set order submission to automatic

In Shopify B2B, use `Automatically submit orders`.

This lets the order flow straight into Shopify.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Set the default payment term

On the company location, set payment terms to `Due on fulfillment`.

This is the default term Shopify shows at checkout.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Fill in the Roadmap metafield

Set **Roadmap: Net Monthly Invoice Date** to the invoice day you want.

Use a whole number from `1` to `31`.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Fulfill a test order

Place a test order and fulfill it.

Roadmap updates the due date a few seconds later.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

### What the retailer sees

At checkout, Shopify still shows the underlying default term.

With the recommended setup, that is `Due on fulfillment`.

<figure><img src="https://393112916-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FJ8asLD4FVCFagK40xEr4%2Fuploads%2FIYNabjmaCjgwMnoFPzQz%2FScreenshot%202026-04-29%20at%2010.08.38%E2%80%AFAM.png?alt=media&amp;token=b3434c94-e11b-4592-8219-2b33a8ce07db" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

After the order is fulfilled, Roadmap replaces that due date with the fixed monthly date from the metafield.

<figure><img src="https://393112916-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FJ8asLD4FVCFagK40xEr4%2Fuploads%2F5QB8Qx7j7uzCUWLYTWqY%2FScreenshot%202026-04-29%20at%2010.09.37%E2%80%AFAM.png?alt=media&amp;token=4d0989b9-3f16-4e4f-9658-55c3cf98bb1f" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Example workflow

Use `20` in **Roadmap: Net Monthly Invoice Date**.

Then this happens:

1. The retailer places an order.
2. Checkout shows `Due on fulfillment`.
3. You fulfill the order.
4. Roadmap rewrites the due date to the `20th` of the following month.

This keeps checkout simple, while still giving finance the exact invoice date on the final order.

### When to leave the metafield blank

Leave the field blank when the retailer should stay on Shopify's normal payment terms.

This works well when you want mixed setups, such as:

* some retailers on monthly invoice dates
* some retailers on standard Shopify `Net` terms
* some retailers paying upfront with `No payment terms`

### Important behavior to expect

Keep these points in mind:

* the override is based on fulfillment date
* the metafield always overrides Shopify's default due date when populated
* the order can show Shopify's default state briefly before Roadmap updates it

If your finance rule should be based on order submission date instead, speak to Roadmap before rollout.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.roadmap.so/trade-and-b2b/checkout-and-payment/handling-custom-payment-terms-like-20th-of-the-month-following.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
