Loyalty points for reviews

Award loyalty points when a customer leaves a verified review — with strict purchase verification and per-order reward limits.

The Leave a verified review earning method gives customers loyalty points each time they submit a review that Roadmap can tie to a real purchase. It's the strictest of Roadmap's review-reward methods: every award requires Roadmap to confirm the customer actually bought the reviewed product, not just that the review is linked to an order.

This article covers where to find the method, the two reward-frequency options, and the eligibility checks that decide whether each review earns points.

Where to find it

In Roadmap, open Loyalty Program, then Loyalty Points. The earning methods you've configured appear under Ways to earn.

The Loyalty Points 'Ways to earn' page with 'Leave a verified review' highlighted as one of the configurable earning methods.

If the method isn't in the list yet, click Add way to earn and pick Leave a verified review from the method selector. To edit an existing method, click Edit on the row.

The earning method, field by field

The Leave a verified review form with the Reward frequency dropdown open — 'Every verified review submitted (default)' and 'Limited to one reward per order'.

Reward frequency

Two options control how many times a customer can earn points from reviews:

Frequency
What it means

Every verified review submitted (default)

Every published, verified review awards points. A customer who reviews three different products on one order earns three rewards. A customer who reviews the same product on two different orders earns twice.

Limited to one reward per order

Only one review per order earns points, regardless of how many products from that order get reviewed. Once the order's reward is claimed, additional reviews on that order's products don't earn.

In both modes, purchase verification is mandatory — the customer must have an order containing the reviewed product. A review submitted on a product the customer hasn't bought earns nothing.

Under Limited to one reward per order, unverified reviews with no order link are blocked entirely. There's no order to group by, so the per-order rule can't be enforced. Use Every verified review submitted if you want unverified-but-purchase-confirmed reviews to also earn.

What makes a review eligible

Roadmap runs these checks before awarding points. All must pass:

  1. The review exists and is published. Pending or rejected reviews don't earn.

  2. A customer ID is resolved. Roadmap uses, in order, the customer ID on the review record; the order's customer ID if the review has an order link; an email lookup against your customer database.

  3. Your store has loyalty enabled and a Leave a verified review earning method configured.

  4. The customer is enrolled in the loyalty program.

  5. The customer has actually purchased the reviewed product. Roadmap fetches the customer's recent orders, up to about 200, and confirms one contains the product. Without a matching order, no points.

  6. No duplicate award exists for the same product+order combination under Every verified review submitted, or for the same order under Limited to one reward per order.

When any check fails, the review still gets stored — it just doesn't earn points. A Review points not awarded event is added to the customer's loyalty Timeline under the Not Awarded tab, recording the exact reason. This is what to point a confused customer at when they ask why their review didn't earn.

The customer's loyalty Timeline Not Awarded tab showing two Review points not awarded events. The yellow callouts surface the reason (already-rewarded vs not-purchased) and, where helpful, the admin path to the setting.

Common review-specific Timeline entries:

  • Review for [Product] was not rewarded because points were already earned for reviewing this product. — the customer hit the reward frequency cap. The yellow callout includes a pointer to the setting: You can change how often reviews are rewarded in Loyalty > Ways to Earn > Leave a verified review.

  • Customer has not purchased the reviewed product. — purchase verification failed. No order in the customer's history contains the reviewed product, so points can't be awarded.

For a review-specific troubleshooting flow, see Review submitted but no points.

Klaviyo integration

When points are successfully awarded for a review, Roadmap fires a Klaviyo event with the customer and points data. Use this to:

  • Confirm the points earned in an automated email

  • Segment customers by review engagement

  • Trigger flows for review-based rewards, for example a "thanks for reviewing" message

The Klaviyo event fires regardless of whether the review also generates a discount code via the Discount Code Generator — the two systems are independent.

Common configurations

"100 points for every verified review, no per-order cap"

  • Points value: 100

  • Reward frequency: Every verified review submitted

  • Status: Active

A customer who reviews three products on one order earns 300 points. A customer who reviews the same product again from a later order earns another 100.

"Cap to one reward per order to prevent point inflation"

  • Points value: 150

  • Reward frequency: Limited to one reward per order

  • Status: Active

Per order, the first eligible review earns 150 points. Subsequent reviews on the same order are stored but don't earn.

"Pause review rewards temporarily without losing config"

  • Status: Paused

The method stays configured but no reviews earn points until you switch back to Active.

Common scenarios

"A customer reviewed three products on one order but only got points for one"

The method is configured to Limited to one reward per order. Per-order mode is working as intended. Switch to Every verified review submitted if you want each review to earn.

"A customer reviewed a product they bought, but the review is unverified — do they earn?"

If the review came in without an order ID and you're on Limited to one reward per order, no. The per-order mode requires an order to group by.

If you're on Every verified review submitted, Roadmap's email lookup will check the customer's order history and verify the review — provided the customer ID can be resolved and they have a matching order.

"A customer reviewed a product they haven't bought — do they earn?"

No. Loyalty points always require purchase verification. The review may still display on the storefront as unverified, and may still earn a discount code if your Discount Code Generator is configured for unverified reviews. But points always require the customer to have bought the reviewed product.

"We changed the reward frequency last week — did the change apply retroactively?"

No. Existing point awards stay. The new frequency setting applies only to reviews submitted after the change.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between this and the Discount Code Generator's review trigger?

The Discount Code Generator emails a discount code. This method awards loyalty points. They run independently — a single review can earn both, neither, or one of the two, depending on each system's frequency settings.

The other big difference: loyalty points always verify purchase. The customer must have bought the product. Discount codes verify order linkage only — the review needs to be tied to an order to count as verified — and the Every review (unverified and verified) mode skips that check too. Loyalty is strictly purchase-bound. Discounts are looser. See Discount codes for reviews.

Why didn't a customer earn points on what looks like a valid review?

Open the customer in Loyalty Program → Manage Customers, then check the Not Awarded tab on their Timeline. The reason — for example, Reward limit reached for this order or No matching order found for product — is recorded there. For the review-specific checks, see Review submitted but no points.

What happens if a customer's review is published, then later un-published by a moderator?

Points are awarded at the moment of publication. Subsequently rejecting or un-publishing the review does not claw back points already awarded.

Can the same review earn points twice?

No. Roadmap tracks awards per product+order, or per order in per-order mode, and rejects duplicates. Reprocessing a review, for example an admin re-publish, does not double-award.

Do I need to configure anything if I have an existing review-rewards setup?

No — existing setups continue with their legacy behavior, effectively one reward per product per order. The new dropdown appears the next time you open the method form. Switching to the new options applies going forward only.
