# Ways to redeem points: overview

The two reward types customers can spend points on, where they redeem them, and how redemption works.

Ways to redeem are rewards customers can spend their points on. Find them in **Loyalty Program → Points**, below ways to earn.

#### The two reward types

* **Amount Discount** — redeem points for a fixed-amount or percentage-off coupon.
* **Product Redemption** — redeem a full product for a set number of points.

Product redemptions are available only through the **Product Redeemer** block.

Drag handles in **Ways to redeem** to reorder rewards. This sets their storefront order.

{% hint style="info" %}
Free gifts and discounts earned by **reaching a membership tier** aren't ways to redeem points. They're tier rewards, claimed through the **Customer Rewards** block instead: see [The Customer Rewards storefront redeeming block](/loyalty-and-rewards/membership-tiers-and-referrals/the-customer-rewards-storefront-redeeming-block.md).
{% endhint %}

#### Restrict a reward to specific tiers

Like ways to earn, each reward has a **Membership tier eligibility** setting. Leave it empty to offer the reward to all members, or select tiers to make it exclusive: members only see and redeem the rewards their tier is eligible for. Use this for VIP-only rewards or a tag-based tier's own redemption menu.

#### Where customers redeem

* **Loyalty page** — use **Redeem Loyalty Points** or **Product Redeemer**.
* **Customer accounts** — use the loyalty block in legacy customer accounts.
* **Cart** — use the cart point redeemer in the cart drawer or cart page.

{% hint style="info" %}
Using Shopify's new customer accounts? A point-redemption block is shipping very shortly. Check the app’s **Change Log** for updates.
{% endhint %}

#### How redemption works: two steps

1. **Redeem** — the customer spends points on a reward. This generates their discount.
2. **Apply** — the discount applies immediately to their current cart.

If they leave without checkout, the code stays attached to their account. It is ready next time they return. The cart redeemer shows unused codes with **CLICK TO APPLY**.

#### Who can use a redemption code

A redemption code is not a public code. It is restricted to the customer who redeemed it, so it cannot be passed on to someone else.

{% hint style="info" %}
B2B companies share a point balance, so their redemption codes work differently. See [Setting up B2B points: ways to earn and redeem](/loyalty-and-rewards/b2b-loyalty/setting-up-b2b-points-ways-to-earn-and-redeem.md).
{% endhint %}

#### What a code can stack with

Stacking is set per reward, not globally. Each Amount Discount has a **Coupon can be combined with** setting covering Shopify's three discount classes: Product Discounts, Order Discounts and Shipping Discounts. Anything you leave unticked will not combine with that coupon, and a cart holding an incompatible discount has the code rejected.

The same reward also carries a product scope and a minimum order value. See [Set up an amount discount reward](/loyalty-and-rewards/points-and-ways-to-earn/set-up-an-amount-discount-reward.md).

Product redemption codes are locked to the product chosen at redemption, so they cannot be spent on anything else.

#### If a customer redeems by mistake

Only an admin can return points. Search the code or customer email in **Loyalty Program → Unused Loyalty Coupons**, then refund it. This returns the points and deletes the Shopify discount. See [Refund an unused loyalty coupon](/loyalty-and-rewards/points-and-ways-to-earn/refund-an-unused-loyalty-coupon.md).

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.roadmap.so/loyalty-and-rewards/points-and-ways-to-earn/ways-to-redeem-points-overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
