# Ways to earn points: overview

Every way customers can earn loyalty points in Roadmap, from orders and birthdays to anniversaries and tier promotions, plus the settings all earners share.

Ways to earn are the actions that award customers loyalty points. Find them in **Loyalty Program → Points**, alongside your [ways to redeem](/loyalty-and-rewards/points-and-ways-to-earn/ways-to-redeem-points-overview.md).

#### The ways to earn

* **Place an order** awards points for every dollar spent. You can run several rules at once.
* **Account Signup** awards points when a customer's loyalty account is enabled.
* **Celebrate a Birthday** awards points once yearly, on or around a birthday.
* **Membership Anniversary** awards points each year on the anniversary of the customer joining the program.
* **Tier Promotion** awards points when a customer is promoted into a tier you choose.
* **Leave a verified review** awards points when a purchased-product review is approved and published.
* **Customer Tag** awards points when Shopify applies a customer tag.
* **Display Only** adds a tile to the Ways to Earn block without awarding points, for showcasing rewards that live elsewhere, like referrals and birthday vouchers.
* **Subscription Rewards** awards points each time a customer reaches a set number of subscription products purchased. Eg. Every 3 products ordered on subscription earns 100 points.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Place an order**, **Customer Tag**, **Tier Promotion**, and **Display Only** can be added multiple times. Configure each other type once.
{% endhint %}

#### Settings every way to earn shares

* **Display name** and **Description** appear in storefront loyalty widgets.
* **Status** can be **Active** or **Draft**. Draft earners do not award points.
* **Storefront widget display** can be **Visible** or **Hidden**. Hidden earners still award points.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.roadmap.so/loyalty-and-rewards/points-and-ways-to-earn/ways-to-earn-points-overview.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
