# Birthday discount codes

Generate a birthday discount code for members and choose the timing that best fits your campaign strategy.

Use this trigger when a member birthday should unlock a discount code.

Birthday rewards work best when the timing matches how customers shop.

### Where to find it

In Roadmap, open **Discounts / GWPs**, click **Create a new discount**, and choose **Discount Code Generator**.

### Choose the trigger

In **Trigger**, select **On member birthday**.

Then choose **When to trigger**.

The timing choice changes the campaign strategy, not only the send date.

### Birthday timing options

#### On their birthday

Use this when you want a true occasion-based reward.

This creates the strongest birthday moment and the clearest urgency.

Choose this option when:

* the brand wants the offer tied to the exact day
* the reward window is short
* the category supports impulse or same-day purchases

This is usually the best fit for celebratory offers and strong day-of messaging.

#### First of the birthday month

Use this when customers need more time to redeem.

This shifts the campaign from a single-day moment to a birthday-month offer.

Choose this option when:

* the brand wants a softer, longer conversion window
* customers often shop before or after the exact birthday
* the campaign should be easy to plan and repeat each month

This is usually the best fit for lifestyle, apparel, and lower-urgency categories.

#### Days before birthday

Use this when the purchase needs planning time.

This creates intent before the birthday arrives.

Choose this option when:

* customers buy gifts, bookings, or higher-consideration items
* you want the code in the inbox before the shopping moment
* the brand wants to build the basket before the birthday itself

This is usually the best fit for gifting, beauty restocks, dining, travel, and premium categories.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you want the most urgency, use **On their birthday**.

If you want the most flexibility, use **First of the birthday month**.

If customers need lead time, use **Days before birthday**.
{% endhint %}

### Member requirement

This trigger is member-based.

The member needs a birthday saved on their profile before the trigger can run.

### Configure the discount

Set the reward details after the trigger:

* **Discount type** and **Discount value**
* **Code prefix**
* **Applies to**
* **Purchase Type**
* **Minimum spend**
* **Quantity limit**
* **Expires after**

A shorter expiry creates urgency.

A longer expiry supports birthday-month campaigns.

### Choose delivery

Start with **Trigger a Klaviyo event**.

Klaviyo is the better default for birthday programs because the email usually needs brand styling, timing control, and flow reporting.

Use **Send mail via Roadmap** only when you want a simpler direct-send setup.

### Recommended setups

#### Exact-day birthday reward

* Trigger: **On member birthday**
* When to trigger: **On their birthday**
* Delivery: **Trigger a Klaviyo event**
* Discount: short expiry and strong value

#### Birthday-month reward

* Trigger: **On member birthday**
* When to trigger: **First of the birthday month**
* Delivery: **Trigger a Klaviyo event**
* Discount: longer expiry and broader product scope

#### Plan-ahead birthday offer

* Trigger: **On member birthday**
* When to trigger: **Days before birthday**
* Delivery: **Trigger a Klaviyo event**
* Discount: enough expiry to cover the pre-birthday window

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.roadmap.so/discounts-and-gwp/using-gwp-and-discounts/discount-code-generator/birthday-discount-codes.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
